The NJI Media Interactive team just completed a two-day bootcamp with Chris Pliakas [@cpliakas] from Acquia. We dug into Drupal Commons, a complete solution for building über advanced community websites. Very cool stuff.

More and more, our clients ask us about building communities and creating real dialogue to communicate with brands, lawmakers and advocacy groups. Drupal Commons is a great option to meet this need.

Commons is what is known as a Drupal distribution: this means that it’s a bunch of existing Drupal modules that are bundled together and pre-configured into a single, easy-to-install package. Each package runs on a regular-old awesome Drupal core content management system. Added to this core are layers of extra features that allow our developers to focus on particular tasks and feature-sets. There are a number of distributions available, like Phase2Technologies and Open Publish, which is a distribution for publishers, or Development Seed’s Open Atrium, which is designed to help manage projects.

We’re working on NJI Media’s first Commons project now, and we’ll be sure to update the blog as our progress continues.

If you’d like to know more about Drupal — and how to build communities and create conversation with the people who use your products, and care about your issues — drop our CEO Nathan Imperiale a line.
