Our Chief Panda Officer (CPO), always near the genesis of an inspired idea (or cocktail), often recalls Marcel Proust’s wit for answering Victorian parlor game questions. Pixel has traveled far from the salons of Paris, but her interest remains piqued in which questions truly reflect a person’s character. Packing just the right amount of punch, NJI created The Pixel Questionnaire to give a glimpse into the inner workings of some of our most intriguing minds.
Ever mindful of her interview subject, Pixel put together an avant garde evening complete with a cool glass of aguas frescas and the perfect playlist — a night Senior Graphic Designer Em Salinas wouldn’t dare miss.
If you had a superpower?
The ability to translate any language
On what occasions do you lie?
When I want my nephew to win the board game faster so I can go do other things
Your most treasured possession?
An original ‘60s Farfisa organ that I got from a friend. No other keyboard in the world sounds quite like it. All I need is for someone to teach me the riff from “96 Tears.”
What would you do if you got stuck in an elevator?
Hyperventilate. Then get exhausted and bored and delete photos from my phone.
If not yourself, who would you be?
A welder or goldsmith
What is your favorite drink?
Any flavor of aguas frescas
If you could go back in time, where would you go?
The happenings of the ‘50s and ‘60s in New York
If a movie were made about your career, what would be the title?
Up
Garden gnomes — what do you think?
I don’t think about them.
You’ve been given an elephant. What do you do?
Watch the Simpsons episode where Bart gets an elephant and then feel bad and take it to a wildlife refuge.
What one object do you take with you on a desert island (you have water and food already)?
Headphones and an iPod
What was the last gift you gave someone?
Steely Dan’s “Aja” on vinyl, although admittedly I’ve never listened to it
What is your most unusual talent?
I have won a couple of culinary competitions, including one called Small Foods where I made miniature cakes.
If you could breed two animals together, what would they be?
I would create a new breed of feline bumblebees, so that I could release a swarm of bees with cute little cat faces. They would be fat and fuzzy, pollinating wildlife and bewildering humans. What’s not to love?
If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Tacos, because the varieties are endless
Do you have any superstitions?
I don’t think I have any superstitions, but I do think about the “Satanic Panic” era of the ‘90s a lot if anyone wants to talk about it.
What is something you hate but wish you loved?
Autotune. I think there are probably a lot of artists doing cool things with autotune these days, but it will always make me think of T-Pain.
What is something you get wrong every time you try?
I cannot accept that the word “restaurant” is not spelled the French way: “restaraunt.”

Jenny Slate

A contortionist

Wool from a vicuña, which is super soft, and the rarest and most expensive textile in the world

It would be hilarious to talk to crows.
Who inspires you?
Anyone who’s out here practicing transformative and restorative justice
What’s the greatest length you’ve gone to for a client?
Searching on Chinese manufacturing search engines to find someone to make a client’s product with a reduced carbon footprint
If NJI were a television show or movie, what would it be?
“50 First Dates,” because of all the Zoom meetings!
Who will Pixel interview next? The subject is yet to be revealed, but your patience will be rewarded. She always has the most unexpected ideas.
